A Woman Looking At A Price Label On A Clothes Rack

Question

It is better to buy just a few expensive clothes, rather than lots of cheaper clothes. Do you agree or disagree?

Model Answer

There are some expenses that are unavoidable in life, one of which is clothing. When buying clothes though you can choose to either get a few quality items or buy more affordable clothes in greater quantity. I do not have strong feelings either way but overall I prefer to buy cheaper clothes as I worry less about ruining them.

On the one hand, buying expensive clothes can actually represent quite good value for money. Often cheap clothes only last a little while before they need replacing, whereas well-made designer brands are usually more durable. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, the craftsmanship on expensive clothes tends to be better; the stitching is more secure and the quality of the work is checked more rigorously. Secondly, the material tends to be of overall higher quality. As a result, the clothes withstand everyday wear and tear much better.

Nevertheless, I still prefer to buy cheaper clothes. Like many people, I am quite clumsy. This means that I often spill drinks, trip in the street or somehow snag my clothes on furniture around the house. No matter how good the quality of the clothing, my clothes are liable to get damaged quite quickly. Under these circumstances, it makes much more sense to wear cheap clothes because I can replace ruined items at relatively little cost.

To sum up, not everyone will agree but I think it is better to buy a lot of cheaper clothes as it saves you from having to worry about damaging them in some way.
