A Young Man Reading In A Library

Question

Your local council is considering closing a library that it runs, in order to save money. Write a letter to the local council. In your letter — give details of how you and your friends or family use the library, explain why the library is important for the local community, describe the possible effects on local people if the library closes.

Model Answer

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to inform you of my disappointment regarding the possible closure of the library in Safton. Whilst I appreciate that the council needs to reduce expenditure, I feel such a move would be a mistake.

I have been a member of the library for forty something years. I used to take my children to the children's workshops and I know that my grandchildren continue to enjoy these. It is one of the few places they can listen to stories read aloud.

For someone my age, the library is a lifeline. Many pensioners suffer from terrible loneliness and the coffee mornings that the library organises give them a chance to socialise. My friends attend these events regularly.

If the library were to close, older people especially would suffer, as they would spend more time at home alone. Much joy and pleasure would also be lost to the book reading public.

I implore you to reconsider your decision,

Yours faithfully,
